CANADA DOES HAVE RABIES. Canada does have instances of rabies found mostly in bats and raccoons. Some countries require the CFIA to supply documentation to give a kilometer free radius from where a pet originates before they will accept the pet (even though its rabies vaccinations are up to date).
KILLED VACCINE: Your pet must be inoculated using killed/inactive vaccine, but most vets already know this.
Many countries require the validity of the vaccination to be within 365 days of arrival in the country, or through quarantine period, plus a week. Ask your vet to give only a one year vaccine - all vets can do this for you.
RABIES INOCULATIONS: Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies after an ISO readable 15 digit microchip has been implanted. Some countries demand several rabies vaccinations after microchipping within a specified time - this does no harm to your pet.
Some countries require a blood test (called a rabies titre) is drawn a month after a rabies vaccination has been given. This expensive test is sent to Kansas State, and will take a month (or more) to return. What the titre does is to verify that the vaccination has reached it's full potential, and has a minimum standard that is normally met, and usually far exceeded (Minimum = 0.5IU/mL)

North America is not rabies free
The CFIA mandates that the first rabies inoculation be accepted as being only a one year validity (no matter what the coverage period actually was), and that subsequent rabies inoculations are given within the validity of the previous (not going over by even one day), otherwise it is seen that the pet has not been properly covered. All rabies vaccination certificates must prove this; otherwise, another rabies inoculation must be given prior to flight within the requirements of the arrival country's legislation on such matters.
