 Microchips

WHAT IS A MICROCHIP, HOW SAFE IS IT?

A microchip implant is a unique identifying integrated circuit, injected with a syringe, under the skin of your pet, usually between the shoulder blades (no anesthetic is required). The chip (about the size of a grain of rice), uses passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, meaning it lacks an internal power source, remaining inert until it is powered by the scanner. It is scanned using a non-invasive reader that picks up the number emitted by the radio frequency - neither the frequency nor the number can be tampered with, and they are unique to your pet (never repeated anywhere in the world).

KINDS OF MICROCHIP:

There are two kinds of microchip - always use the ISO-readable (15 digit) microchip in your pet. The other kind is mostly used to track local pets, it is not universally readable. There are several manufacturers of microchips including (not limited to): Petnet (10 Digit with/without letters) PH:18003381397, M4S (10 digit 0A0)(952)(967)(982) PH:18777384384, 24 Petwatch (982) PH:18665972424, AVID (10 digit, end in A)(977) PH:18003381397/18003362843, and EIDAP (968)(956) PH:18883468897, American Kennel Club (940) PH:18002527894. Veterinarians read the microchip the first time they see a pet (to record the number), then scan again when they next see the pet for any work that requires them to create a certificate. Animal shelters, and animal control officers often use the microchip for speedy return of a lost pet to their owners; customs officials read the microchip in your pet to confirm its identity against the paperwork provided.

MICROCHIP CERTIFICATE:

The microchip company name, and date of implantation must be on the certificate, the owners contact information, pet's name, birth date, and description. The form must be correct. Countries will require a copy, so the owner should not lose it. It's the veterinarians responsibility to provide accurate information on the registration certificate that they send back to the manufacturer; however, the manufacturer may fail to complete that process correctly. CHECK IT ! This is your pets identity in a number.

MICROCHIP SIGNAL LOSS:

Microchips may 'travel' inside your pet. One that was injected between the shoulder blades may find its way to an armpit, or down the back - anywhere. Improperly injected microchips can even pop out in a few minutes, or hours from the injection sight. Your pet may even scratch, or bite it out of themselves any time it becomes annoying! THERE IS NO CERTAINTY that an injected microchip may not be expelled from your pet. It is also possible for microchip readers not to read the microchip if the battery power is low in the scanning device. DO CHECK with your vet that it is still readable between 4 to 3 weeks prior to flight, and confirm with them that the numbers exactly match the certificates your vet provides.
