BREED MIXES really apply more to dogs than cats, where the airline, and destination clearance is concerned. If you're not sure what mix of breed your dog is, because (for example) you bought it from the pound, or had it given to you, it is very important to know well before flight. Your vet should have made an accurate assessment, but even there, one vet may call it predominantly one breed, and another vet may offer a differing opinion (like, for example, the difference between a Bernese Mountain dog/Labrador mix, and a Rottweiler/Shepherd mix). To say that your dog is a mutt, while being good enough to give you a quote for a "mutt", your vet must be more specific on the certificates they provide to us, and their assessment could stop the shipment from happening if there is even the slight resemblance to a mix that is banned in Ontario, or on the aircraft, or at destination. There are 44 breeds of terrier, some are banned almost everywhere in the world. If you're deceptive, it may not be identified until it reaches our vet, or even the destination, where it is stopped, and sent back at your cost. Really check with your vet to make sure of breeds and especially breed mixes.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY to accurately tell us what breed your pet is, and if it is mixed, what is predominant and the other breed. You live with your pet, we don't see your pet cat or dog until the few moments it is being loaded into a kennel at your home, sometimes not even then because you put your pet into the kennel, or your vet does, and sometimes we don't even see your pet until the flight date because you delivered it over to our vet yourself - each of these times when we finally get to see your pet(s) is very late in the shipping process, and much too late for you to learn that your pet(s) might not be accepted on the flight, or into the destination country because it looks too much like a banned breed. If there is any uncertainty, it is your responsibility to get a DNA test done. In the last days before flight, when our vet sees your pet(s), if there is no DNA test result, or breed certificate, what they assess the breed/mix to be is the definitive decision. Petflight does not ship banned breeds.
HOW TO FIND OUT WHAT BREED MIX YOUR DOG IS The first person you should ask is your vet; however, even vets can be a bit mystified. Just because your vet thought its breed might be "X" on their certificate doesn't mean your dog is that breed, it might be "Y". The one true measure of knowing for sure what your dog is mixed with is to do a DNA TEST. Accu-Metrics (located in Toronto, Canada, and all across North America) will send out a test kit, you swab, send it back, and within about 3 weeks...
